Speaker: Dr. James Lynch
Date: April 6th Room: 3-370 Time: 2:30pm Abstract: The Navy has had a longstanding interest in continental shelves and slopes as operational areas. In order to improve our basis cunderstanding of acoustics, oceanography, and autonomous underwater vehicle operations in such areas, the Office of Naval Research (ONR) sponsored a large, multi-disciplinary, multi-institution, multi-national experiment off the coast of New Jersey in the summer of 2006, designated "SW06." This large scale experiment had three named components corresponding to the three research areas: in acoutics LEAR (for Littoral Environmental Acoustics Research), in physical oceanography NLIWI (the Non Linear Internal Waves Initiative), and in vehicles AWACS (for Acoustic Wide Area Coverage for Surveillance), In this seminar, I will try to provide a brief overview of this project, its scientific and technical rationale, and it's current status. |
