Multidisciplinary Ocean Dynamics and Engineering Laboratory http://modelseas.mit.edu/seminars/ Seminar Series "Acoustic Communications and Ocean Observatories" Prof. Art Baggeroer MIT Department of Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences Tuesday, May 29 12 noon, Room 5-314 Abstract: Acoustic communication (acomms) systems have been advocated as part of several ocean observatory systems. The realities of acomms over distances of 10+ kms and the achievable bit rates are currently the subject of a lot of research. What is really required is a symbiotic effort among acousticians who understand the propagation and modern communication engineers who know how to exploit advanced coding and modulation methods. This talk will discuss the state of the art of acomms and its use for ocean observatories as well as distributed surveillance systems. Host: Prof. Pierre Lermusiaux
