November 2007 Dean of Engineering Subra Suresh has announced that, effective January 1, 2008, Professor Dick Yue, the Philip J. Solondz (1948) Professor of Engineering, will become the MIT Co-director for SMA-2 (Singapore-MIT Alliance 2), as well as the School's first Director of International Programs. Professor Yue succeeds Professor Steven Lerman as SMA-2 Co-director. In his new role as the SoE Director for International Programs, Prof. Yue will coordinate and streamline the School’s international activities, and interface with Associate Provost Philip Khoury and his Institute-wide committee on MIT’s international activities. A member of the Mechanical Engineering faculty, Prof. Yue is internationally recognized for his expertise in ocean and coastal wave dynamics and for his extensive work in nonlinear wave mechanics, large-amplitude motions, and loads on ships and offshore structures. Prof. Yue will complete his term as Associate Dean of Engineering on December 31, 2007, a position he has held since 1999. As Associate Dean, he founded and directed the Engineering Council for Undergraduate Education (ECUE). Prof. Yue originated the concept of OpenCourseWare (OCW) and played a major role in its adoption by MIT. He is also the founding Faculty Director of the School's Undergraduate Practice Opportunities Program (UPOP), which began in 2001 and now enrolls more than 200 sophomores every year. An excellent classroom teacher, Prof. Yue has continued to teach and maintain a very active research program while serving as Associate Dean. He has also played a lead role in helping the School of Engineering with the ABET accreditation process. |
