Faculty Appointments at KAIST in Ocean Systems:

 

KAIST (www.kaist.edu) is a leading research university in the world funded by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology of the Republic of Korea. It has about 4,800 graduate and about 3,300 undergraduate students. In 37 years of its history, it has generated 8,500 graduates with baccalaureate degrees, 17,000 graduates with MS, and 8,500 with PhDs degrees. About 25% of Samsung Electronics PhDs and 10% of all S&T professors in Korea are KAIST graduates. Many professors in the North America are KAIST graduates. KAIST students are in the top 0.1% of all high school graduates and many of its professors are leaders in their fields.

KAIST has established a new Department of Ocean Systems Engineering and is seeking to hire faculty members with expertise in ocean systems and other related disciplines of science and engineering. The successful applicant is expected to be an effective teacher as well as an outstanding researcher.

Applicants with exceptional creativity, industrial experience, and strong foundations in basic disciplines are preferred, although outstanding recent PhDs will also be considered. Non-Korean applicants will be given a preferential opportunity, since KAIST is a bilingual – English and Korean -- global university. The goal of KAIST is to increase the number of international and women faculty members to at least 20% of its faculty.

Appointments will be made at all levels: full professor, associate professor, and assistant professor. The effective date for appointment can be adjusted to give the successful candidate as much flexibility as possible. The next academic year of KAIST commences on February 1, 2009.

All the fields of ocean systems engineering and related fields, although current areas of interest are the interdisciplinary technologies, such as:

 

- Harbor design

- Shipping construction management

- Ocean plant engineering

- Underwater vehicle acoustics

- Marine environment system engineering

- System design modeling simulation

 

 Applicants can apply at any time of the year. For the initial hiring, the tentative schedule is follows:

Interview and seminar: July ~ September, 2008

Final notification: End of September, 2008
