The Department of Ocean Engineering offers a five-year combined SB/SM option, whereby a student who plans to continue on to graduate school may plan his or her schedule so that the requirements for both degrees can be completed by the end of the fifth year. If the student's SM thesis is in the same area as his or her restricted elective program, the requirement for 12 units of individual design/research (13.700-13.709) is waived, and 12 additional units must be added to the unrestricted electives. Students should, however, be aware of registration restrictions for students receiving staff (RA or TA) appointments in the fifth year (contact Professor J. Kim Vandiver for DEPARTMENT STANDARDS FOR MINIMUM & MAXIMUM ALLOWABLE REGISTRATION.) An MIT junior in good standing may apply for graduate admission to the Department. Admission to this program is open to students in Ocean Engineering as well as other engineering disciplines at MIT, especially those who are pursuing a Minor Program in Ocean Engineering. Interested students should contact Professor J. Kim Vandiver kimv at mit.edu.
